The Wall Street Journal reported that 80 percent of our high school seniors nationwide are now scoring below proficiency in science and mathematics (January 26, 2011). Moreover, our Country has now slipped to 31st in world science and math education. Alarming? You bet it is. It seems that something is very wrong with our approach to science teaching in our public schools and a course reversal is needed.

baby_faceWhile the 20th century has gone down in history as the century of energy fueled by the atom, the 21st century is proving to be the century of medicine propelled by the gene.  In just the first decade of this new century advances in molecular biomedical sciences have outpaced all prior discoveries throughout the history of mankind.  Since the human genome was effectively deciphered in 2000, science continues to unravel the complexities and ordering significance of some 3.5 billion nucleotides comprised of the 4 bases we’ve all come to know and love – ACTG.   Multisyllabic terms like pharmacogenomics and nucleotide polymorphisms are moving out of research laboratories and into every day applications.  It seems clear that medicine will experience hereto unrivaled rates of growth in this decade and those to come,  propelled by our new understanding of the wonders of DNA.

lotterySeveral months ago I was standing in line to pay for fuel at a gas station in a neighboring state while several patrons in front of me were shelling out hard earned money for lottery tickets.  I decided long ago that I would not play such games because the odds of winning are out of my comfort zone.  There is no chance of ever seeing me on the nightly news holding an enlarged million dollar lottery check, but then again you won’t see me doling out dollar after dollar in return for, in all probability, worthless ticket stubs.
